I don't think he's trying to avoid anything. He's just fighting for something he truly believes in and he has a lot of supporters so why would he give up? If what he's doing is wrong/right is of course up to individuals. But I think if he goes to jail/trial/whatever he'll be happy knowing he put up a fight and did what he believed in
